The Vaalkop Water Board was established on 6 January 1970 to supply purified water for household and industrial use to the platinum mines in the Northam area, the town of Northam, Saulspoort and the farming community. With the change of name to Magalies Water in September 1983, the supply area was extended to include an area north of the Magaliesberg stretching from Hartbeespoort to Hammanskraal and Bronkhorstspruit, Warmbaths and Nylstroom. In 1996 regions previously situated within the former Bophuthatswana and which were supplied by North West Water Supply Authority, were incorporated into the Board's area of jurisdiction.
